I meant to put this post together last week, but due to unforeseen circumstances and difficult week personally, this V-day post comes early this week. Hopefully you have plenty of time to get the ingredients and perfect these cocktails or study the drinker traits before the weekend or your date arrives.

Some of you may not be aware, but in my former profession, I was paid (not very well I might add) to read and analyze people. More specifically, I was trained to psychologically evaluate what people were thinking and what was the impetus for their resulting behavior, choices, and actions. Thanks to six years of schooling, seminars, workshops, and plenty of hands-on experience, I was pretty good at what I did and it continued to be useful in my current industry. Fast forward to the present, it really hasn’t changed much. I still perform these psychological tests, but applied to the world of drinking, bartending, and libations. Check out a few of my favorite V-day cocktails at the end of the post. Although the cover photo is not listed, I thought it was too pretty to leave out.

Whether you love or hate Valentine’s Day, the truth is that many celebrate the holiday with old-fashioned courting and seduction. That usually entails drinking at a favorite restaurant, watering hole or a romantic dinner at home.

While no two people are the same, there are some generalizations that can be deduced from one’s choice of tipple. So, if you wish to read into your date’s personality by what he or she orders, here are a few observations that I have made over the years providing counsel to poor souls behind the bar. There is no exact science to them, but a fun way to determine if the night will be a successful one or not. Use them at your own risk.

He orders straight liquor, neat or on the rocks: Experienced drinker, knows what he wants. Set in his habits.

He orders stirred, boozy, (classic) cocktails: Hipster or just past hipsterhood, but still in touch somewhat, likes mezcal and rye whiskey, and no doubt has his own bitters recipe. Judges people by what they drink.

He orders Champagne: Careful! Either a player or serious foodie with dough. Can be extremely enjoyable if you know how to dance with him, which he will love you for.

He orders fruit cocktails (and you’re not at the beach): Unless he is Ernest Hemingway or French, he is definitely not interested in drink trends. Might be a person with more flexibility and desire to grow.

He orders beer: Not much to say here. Everybody drinks beer. Maybe he is driving?

He orders what you’re having: Possible first-class lover? Interested in listening, learning and serving. Comes with a double edge though—he might be doing it all for his own selfish reasons.

She orders the Valentine’s Day special: Clearly, the day is very important to her. She will expect you to call her mom and wish her a happy Valentine’s Day down the road.

She orders white wine: Possibly a light drinker. Probably watches her calorie intake. Might be a person who needs constant emotional support. Are you man enough for that?

She orders a type of Old-Fashioned: Follows the trends and wants to be in the know: If it was 1999, she would be ordering a Cosmo with fresh lime juice. Probably a very strong intellect.

She orders Champagne: Lady or a gastronomical junkie. Either way, she is likely to have high standards and expectations. Beautiful women cost money, my dad used to say.

She drinks beer: Possibly more of a buddy than a date. She might play foosball and all the other pub sports better then you. Take her out to a dive bar, but don’t forget to pay for the shots.

She drinks whiskey, a lot of it, neat or on the rocks: Ten years ago, she was just starting with vodka and soda or cranberry. Today she drinks too much…

Velvet Rose

My version of the “French Martini”. This elixir offers some sweetness and bubbly to celebrate the occasion. For a more a bolder/less sweet taste, add 2 oz of vodka instead of 1.5. If not served for V-day, eliminate the candied hearts and use a fresh raspberry instead. This is one of the popular cocktails for all type of events at Raise Yoir Spirits. Both men and women enjoy this liquid heaven…Book Now!!!

  • 1.5 oz Premium Vodka, like Ketel One, Belvedere (my preference), or Grey Goose (makes it a French Martini)
  • 1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Pineapple Juice
  • Top with a Brut Champagne or Sparkling Wine

Prep – Add all ingredients except champagne to a mixing tin. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish candied hearts or fresh raspberry.

Lady Killer

The Lady Killer cocktail recipe tastes mainly like pineapple and passion fruit juices, but with hints of orange, apricot and some citrus-herbal notes from the gin. It’s a pretty sweet drink, but most of the sweetness comes from fruit juices rather than liqueurs. This one is definitely for the ladies!

  •  1 oz Gin
  • ·1/2 oz Cointreau
  •  1/2 oz Apricot Brandy
  •  2 oz Passion Fruit juice
  •  2 oz Fresh Orange juice
  • Top with Prosecco (optional)

Prep – Shake everything together with ice in a shaker. Put some crushed ice into a champagne flute and strain the mixture into the glass. top with sparkling wine (optional). Garnish with a cherry.

Enjoy Responsibly!!!
