The Fizz family of drinks emerged in popularity in the 1910’s, 20’s, and 30’s, when citrus fruit juices (lime or lemon), carbonated water, a spirit, a sweetening agent, and other ingredients were combined to produce a concoction that kept people cool under their layers of clothing, even if hemlines have been raised or lowered quite a bit in the last century.

A modern Fizz, such as the “Springtime Fizz” below, brings tartness, tang, and color in the form of dried Hibiscus flowers along with some sweetness of pomegranate.

“Bear in Mind that all drinks called Fizz’s must be drank as soon as handed out, or the natural taste of the same is lost to the customer.”  ~ Harry Johnson, Bartenders’ Manual, 1882

  • 1 dried hibiscus flower
  • 1 ½ oz Floral Gin, such as Bloom, Magellan Blue, or Opihr
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
  • Chilled Seltzer Water (preferably from a soda siphon or soda stream)
  • Garnish lime and/or pomegranate seeds

Prep – Add the hibiscus flower and lime juice to a shaker. Use a muddler or wooden spoon to muddle well. Fill the shaker halfway full with ice. Add the gin and pomegranate liqueur. Shake well. Fill a highball glass with ice to the top. Strain the mixture through a fine strainer or cheesecloth into the glass. Fill the glass to the top with seltzer water. Stir briefly to combine.

Not everyone can be the main character in a comic strip. For every Spider-Man, there has to be at least one Mary Jane, and for every Wonder Woman, a Steve Trevor, not to mention Otto the Dog in Beetle Bailey. Without these characters, comic books would be far less interesting. Because of that, let’s toast a Violet Fizz, in honor of Violet Gray, the underutilized dark-haired girl in Peanuts, and to each and every one of those supporting characters.

  • 2 oz Floral Gin (see above)
  • ½ oz Crème Yvette
  • ¼ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ oz simple syrup
  • Chilled Seltzer Water (preferably from soda siphon or soda stream)
  • Garnish a fresh violet

Prep – Fill a shaker with all ingredients, except seltzer water.  Add ice. Shake well. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with seltzer water. Stir well and garnish a fresh violet. Drink quickly before those bubbles fade.
